What is a cookie?

Cookies are NOT actual programs and hence they don’t actively do anything. They are simply ’text files’ which typically contain small pieces of information such as a site name and a unique user ID. When you visit a website that uses cookies for the first time, a cookie is downloaded onto your computer. The next time you visit that site, your computer checks to see if it has a cookie for it and sends the information contained in that cookie back to the site.
